Planning Ahead: What to Watch Before the Ontario Salt Season
Supply, logistics and weather all shape salt availability. The signals buyers should watch in the months before winter.
Every year some buyers are caught short when an early storm hits and everyone orders at once. Watching a few signals over the summer helps you decide how much to commit, and when.
Carry-over stock
How much salt you have left from last season changes how much you need to book. Measure it in the summer, before it gets buried in site work.
Shipping season
Much of Ontario’s bulk salt moves by water before freeze-up. Booking early helps suppliers plan inventory while shipping lanes are still open.
Contract timing
- Confirm your own snow contracts first so you know your volumes.
- Request supplier quotes in late summer or early fall.
- Schedule opening deliveries for October and November.
Humber Salt’s pre-season quote program lets contract customers reserve tonnage and delivery windows ahead of the rush.
