In extreme cold, or on gravel and rural roads, a sand-salt blend gives immediate grip where salt alone struggles.

Sand-Salt Mixes: When Traction Matters More Than Melting

Salt melts, sand grips. A blended sand-salt mix gives you both. That makes it the go-to for rural roads, gravel lots and deep-cold days when salt alone works too slowly.

Why blend?

The salt keeps the stockpile from freezing solid and starts melting on contact. The sand gives immediate traction, even when temperatures are too low for salt to work quickly.

Common blend ratios

  • Mostly sand with a little salt: keeps the pile workable and gives maximum grip.
  • Balanced mixes: traction and melting on mixed surfaces.
  • Salt-heavy mixes: faster melting with some added grip.

Clean-up considerations

Sand has to be swept up in spring and can clog drains, so factor clean-up into your contract pricing.
