Road Salt Guides Winter Safety
Pre-Season Checklist: Getting Your Salt Storage Winter-Ready
Wet, clumped or contaminated salt costs you money. Use this checklist to prepare your dome, pad or bins before your first delivery arrives.
Good storage protects your investment and your environmental compliance. Before your first load of the season arrives, walk your storage area with this checklist.
Structure and cover
- Inspect the roof, tarps and walls for tears, gaps and rot.
- Check that the doors or openings face away from the prevailing wind.
- Confirm the building can take the volume you plan to stockpile.
Pad and drainage
- Make sure the pad is impermeable, with no cracks or wash-outs.
- Clear drainage channels so meltwater can’t pool around the pile.
- Keep runoff away from storm drains, ditches and watercourses.
Safety first: never let anyone stand at the base of a steep salt face. Piles can collapse without warning when loaders undercut them.
Equipment
Loaders and spreaders
Service hydraulics and check spinner motors, then calibrate every spreader so the rate you set is the rate you get.
Record keeping
Set up a simple log for deliveries in, usage out and remaining stock. It makes mid-season re-ordering painless.
Book your first delivery
Once storage is ready, schedule your opening load so it lands before the first forecasted event, not during it.
